A Life-Changing Experience in the Cost of Ecuador

Volunteering with the Surf and Help Camp in Ecuador was one of the most unforgettable and meaningful experiences of my life. Every day was a mix of purpose and adventure, helping care for injured sea turtles, cleaning the beaches, and learning more about marine conservation than I ever expected.

But what made it truly special were the people. The warmth of the local community, the friendships with other volunteers, and the bond we created through shared goals and experiences, it all felt like a big family by the ocean and the waves.

Surfing in the mornings, learning Spanish, and giving back in the afternoons made each day feel full and fulfilling. I came to help, but I left feeling deeply grateful for everything I received in return.

What was the most surprising thing you saw or did?
The most surprising moment for me was the night we helped guide baby sea turtles from their nest to the ocean. I had read about it before, but being there in person, watching these tiny, fragile creatures instinctively move toward the waves under the moonlight, was absolutely magical.

It gave me chills. I never imagined I’d witness something so pure and powerful. In that moment, I truly understood how much impact we can have when we choose to care and protect the natural world around us. It’s something I’ll carry with me forever.
Pros
  • I felt like my work really mattered.
  • I lived the culture, not just visited it.
  • I made amazing friends from around the world.
Cons
  • Communication was hard without Spanish.
  • Plans changed, sometimes last-minute.
  • The dorms were basic, but manageable.
